MISSION STATEMENT
HILTRA provides therapeutic & recreational horseback
riding for individuals with
physical, mental or behavioral challenges, who are striving to
improve the quality of life for them & their families.
Our therapeutic horseback riding program uses the horse and its movement as a unique instrument to provide a variety of therapeutic experiences for individuals with developmental disabilities, or individuals who are “at risk” for developmental disabilities. These disabilities include physical, behavioral & mental challenges with conditions such as Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and Autism. Also included are those with speech and visual impairments.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
HILTRA roots began at a ranch in Havre in 1996, where some interested
people saw a
need for a therapeutic horseback riding program in the Havre area.
After receiving
training in the summer of 1997, the association was formed and a board
of directors was
appointed. In the summer of 1998, 14 children had the opportunity of
participating in
the program and demonstrated significant improvement in multiple areas.
Their
confidence, self worth, sense of accomplishment and their enthusiasm
to return to the
program each week increased. It was through the work of many dedicated
volunteers
that the program has continued to operate. In January of 1999, a part-time
director was
hired to coordinate the services.
Therapy sessions are held at the Great Northern Fairgrounds in the Bigger
Better Barn on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings between 6:00 and 9:00 PM
.
